Important Factors to Ensure Fire Safety
It’s crucial to install the inverter in a well-ventilated area, ideally against a fireproof wall, to prevent overheating. Inverters can get hot, with some parts reaching temperatures up to 60°C. Ensure that nothing is near or around the inverter. It’s also important to choose high-quality solar panels. While lower prices may seem tempting, quality should always be the priority. Micro-Inverter Fire Hazard: Zero Risk
The safest solar installations use micro-inverters. With this system, the power and voltage of each solar panel are converted to the AC voltage used in the home directly on the roof. If any high voltages are detected, the micro-inverter shuts itself off, or the circuit breaker in the meter box trips. This drastically reduces the fire risk. This is different for systems with a central inverter or optimizers.
Solar Panel Fire Hazard with In-Roof Systems
In an in-roof system, the solar panels and their frames replace the roof tiles and are recessed into the roof. While this design is aesthetically pleasing, it has some disadvantages. The panels are closer to the roof, which means there is less ventilation. The panels can become hotter, and in extremely rare cases, this could cause a fire.
Safe Working Environment: Fall Protection for Solar Panel Installations
Installing solar panels involves more than one might initially think. It’s crucial that the work environment for installers is safe. Unfortunately, we often read about accidents during solar panel installations. To ensure safety, our installers use RSS fall protection, scaffolding, and harnesses. RSS fall protection is a safety system that supports the wall and hangs under the gutter. Safety first—we must always assume things could go wrong and take appropriate precautions.
Solar Panel Electrical Safety
Using proper wiring and components in the meter box is vital. The electrician responsible for the meter box must ensure it complies with current laws and regulations, specifically NEN 1010. NEN 1010 is the Dutch standard for safe low-voltage installations. Many older meter boxes or outdated components may not meet these standards. With a solar energy system, energy is fed back into the grid, which places additional strain on the meter box. That’s why we always carefully inspect the existing meter box. Some even have the right to break the grid operator’s seals and install new ones, demonstrating their professionalism and expertise.
