Charging Station: Powering Your Car with Solar Energy
As the number of electric cars grows, so does the demand for charging stations. How great would it be to charge your electric car using the energy from your own solar panels? It feels like filling up for free! OptimaSolar offers charging stations from top brands like SolarEdge, Enphase, and Wallbox. But what should you consider when choosing the right charging station?

How a Charging Station Works
Solar panels generate direct current (DC), but at home, you typically use alternating current (AC). An inverter converts this power so you can use it in your home. Electric cars, on the other hand, charge with direct current, but at home, you can only charge using alternating current—this is what AC chargers do. The car itself then converts the AC into DC for charging.
But did you know there are charging stations that can charge your car entirely with the solar electricity you generate? It’s a smart and sustainable way to power your electric vehicle!

Wallbox Solar Charging
The Wallbox charging station offers two options for utilizing your self-generated solar energy: Eco Mode and Full Green Mode. To use solar charging, you’ll need the Wallbox Power Boost module, which monitors how much energy your solar panels generate and how much your home requires. This module is also essential for load balancing.
The Power Boost can track the remaining green energy and direct it to the charging station. In Eco Mode, the charging station uses as much solar energy as possible, drawing the rest from the grid if needed. In Full Green Mode, the station only uses solar energy, taking nothing from the grid. While this may result in a slightly longer charging time, the combination of these options makes Wallbox a highly suitable charging station for those looking to maximize their use of solar power.

Fast Charging Your Car
As you may already know, fast charging your car is possible when the current doesn’t need to be converted again. Fast chargers provide DC power, like the charging stations you see along highways. At home, one important factor is the type of main connection you have. With a 3-phase charging station, you can charge your electric car the fastest at home. However, you’ll need a 3-phase main connection to do this.
It’s easy to request a 3-phase connection from Enexis, with one-time costs around €300, including VAT. If you’re considering this, we recommend arranging it sooner rather than later, as waiting times at the grid operator can sometimes extend up to six months!

Buying a Charging Station: 1-Phase or 3-Phase
There are both 1-phase and 3-phase charging stations, and the main difference is the charging speed. A 3-phase charge point can charge your car up to three times faster than a 1-phase charge point.
With a 1-phase charging station, the maximum charging capacity is 3.7 kW. On the other hand, a 3-phase charging station can provide a maximum capacity of 11 kW with a 3 x 25A main connection. The higher the capacity of your main connection, the more power the charging station can deliver.

The Capacity of Electric Charging Stations
The charging capacity of an electric car is determined by both the car’s own charging capacity and the capacity of the charging station. The smallest factor is the limiting one! For example, if your car has a charging capacity of 3.7 kW (common in hybrid plug-in cars) and you connect it to a charging station with a maximum capacity of 22 kW, it will still charge at only 3.7 kW.
Many charging stations allow you to adjust the charging power. So, if you upgrade to a new electric car or increase the capacity of your main connection, you can easily increase your charging capacity as well.

Installing a Charging Station with Dynamic Load Balancing
Charging your car requires significant power. Naturally, you don’t want to risk overloading your power supply if you’re cooking and running the washing machine at the same time, simply because your charging station is drawing too much power. This can easily be avoided with the Dynamic Load Balancing function.
This essential feature helps ensure that your power supply remains stable, even when multiple devices are in use. At OptimaSolar, we believe Dynamic Load Balancing is not just an option, but a must-have for a safe and efficient charging experience.

What Does Charging Station Installation Cost?
The total cost includes the price of the charging station (or charging box) and the installation fees. With OptimaSolar, the installation covers the earth leakage circuit breaker and up to two metres of digging. Additional excavation work is subject to a surcharge. The installation also includes a cable route of up to 10 metres (for longer cable routes, pricing is available upon request). A single-phase charging station is generally less expensive than a three-phase charging station.
