Today, air conditioners can do more than just cool your home. They can also heat it! This is possible with the Mitsubishi and Daikin models installed by OptimaSolar. Especially in autumn and spring, the air conditioner can comfortably heat your home, saving you many cubic meters of gas. Even in winter, it can efficiently heat your home down to -15°C.

Energy Consumption of an Air Conditioner 

The energy consumption of an air conditioner can vary depending on the model. On average, an air conditioner uses about 1 kWh per hour. It also consumes a small amount of power while in standby mode, though this is minimal in newer units. Heating your home with an air-conditioning system is 3 to 5 times more efficient compared to using a high-efficiency boiler. The number of solar panels needed to cover this consumption depends on factors such as the number of air conditioners in use and how many hours they are running.

How a Solar Air Conditioner Works 

Solar panels generate electricity, but it’s in direct current (DC), which needs to be converted to alternating current (AC) to power appliances in your home. First, the electricity is directed to devices that need power at that moment, including the air conditioning unit. Any excess power is then sent through the meter box into the electricity grid, a process known as feed-in.

You can definitely heat your home using an air-conditioning unit. This not only reduces your gas consumption but also allows you to directly use the electricity generated by your solar panels. Heating with Air Conditioning and Solar Panels 

The average capacity for heating with an air-conditioning unit is about 1 kW per 30 m³ of space. The higher the COP (Coefficient of Performance) value of the air-conditioning unit, the greater its efficiency. For example, if an air conditioner has a COP value of 4, it converts 1 kWh of electricity consumption into 4 kWh of heat. On average, using an air-conditioning unit for heating can reduce gas consumption by up to 60%. Of course, when it gets really cold, the combination with a central heating boiler is very comfortable.

Calculation Example: Air Conditioning Powered by Solar Panels 

Avoid a sky-high energy bill by using your solar panels to power your air conditioner. On average, a family in the Netherlands consumes 1,600 m³ of gas per year. If you were to heat your living room with gas, it would typically cost around 1.5 m³ per hour. At a rate of €1.40 per m³, this would amount to €2.10 per hour. 

In comparison, an air-conditioning unit consumes about 1 kWh per hour. At a rate of €0.35 per kWh, this costs only €0.35 per hour. That’s significantly cheaper than heating with gas!
