Solar Panel Mounting System
Mounting systems come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. For years, OptimaSolar has relied on two Dutch brands for solar panel mounting systems. For flat roof or ground installations, we use Van der Valk Solar Systems. For pitched roofs, we choose Esdec, specifically the ClickFit Evo series. While every roof is unique, we know exactly how to handle it when it comes to solar panel mounting systems!
The most common roof type at OptimaSolar is the pitched roof. Whether it’s tiled, steel, corrugated, standing seam, or slate, there’s a mounting system for every type of roof. The system we use for pitched roofs is the ClickFit Evo from Esdec. Because this range uses many of the same components, installing on a roof type other than a tiled roof is no problem!
Of course, the location of the panels on the roof also affects the components of the mounting system. In many cases, the panels on a tiled roof are installed in portrait orientation (vertically), but it’s also possible to install them in landscape orientation (horizontally). Material-wise, this doesn’t make much difference.
Position of the Panels: Portrait or Landscape
With a flat roof, panels can be installed in portrait, landscape, or east-west orientation. This choice significantly affects the materials needed. For portrait installations, taller portrait feet are used to ensure the panels are positioned at the correct height. In landscape installations, the feet are shorter since the panel’s side is smaller.
An east-west arrangement is possible in both portrait and landscape orientations. This setup allows for a more even distribution of energy throughout the day, which is especially beneficial as the net-metering scheme approaches. Again, you have the option to choose between portrait or landscape, depending on your unique situation.
OptimaSolar always installs flat roof solar panel mounting systems using ballast supports and side plates. This method ensures the panels are securely positioned and better protected against wind gusts.
Ground Mounts
In rural areas, large open plots of land are common, making them an excellent choice for solar panel installations. Ground-mounted systems can be arranged in all the configurations mentioned earlier. Additionally, solar panels can be installed in a ramp configuration, where two, three, or even four panels are stacked on top of each other.

The Inclination of the Solar Panel Mounting System
For pitched roofs, the roof’s slope determines the inclination of the mounting system, typically around 30 degrees. However, with flat roofs, the pitch angle is generally set at 10 degrees by default. This angle ensures that dirt and rainwater slide off the panels effectively, preventing the accumulation of debris that could impact the panel’s appearance.
Aesthetic: The Eye Knows What It Wants
Manufacturers understand that for some people, the visual appeal of solar panel mounting systems is just as important as their functionality. To address this, they offer options for black components. For instance, we can fully equip your pitched roof with black components. For flat roof systems, this can be achieved with black back plates, black side plates, and black caps for the foot supports. So, everything is possible!
Safety and Storm Resistance
Even the Netherlands is not immune to storms from time to time. The solar panel mounting system ensures that your panels stay securely in place. The systems used by OptimaSolar are all thoroughly tested and certified. Additionally, we ensure that there is always sufficient ballast on the ballast carriers of flat roof systems. This is calculated using the manufacturer’s software, which takes into account factors such as roof height, wind exposure, distance from the roof edge, and nearby tall buildings.
Weight of the Solar System and My Roof
A solar panel typically weighs around 20 kilograms on average. It’s important to note that with flat roofs, ballast must also be accounted for, which makes the weight on flat roofs considerably higher than on pitched roofs. Most roofs are suitable for solar panel installations, but in some cases, the roofing may be over 40 years old. In such instances, we recommend replacing the roof covering first. It would be unfortunate to install the panels only to have to remove them a few years later due to roof issues.
Warranty of Mounting Systems
When you invest in a quality solar power system, you naturally expect a reasonable warranty period. All solar panel mounting systems used by OptimaSolar come with a minimum warranty of ten years. For pitched roofs, the warranty extends to twenty-five years. Additionally, we offer a five-year installation guarantee on our work. So, if anything ever goes wrong, just give us a call!
