A power optimizer is the solution when you want solar panels but are bothered by that one tree that causes partial shading over a number of panels. In this blog, we explain how the power optimizer used by OptimaSolar works, as well as its pros and cons!
OptimaSolar uses the power optimizer from SolarEdge. An optimizer “optimizes” the energy yield of your (future) solar panels. The device, also known as an electronic chip, ensures that the panels are linked independently. Each panel is controlled separately to maximize energy yield, even when there is shading.
How Solar Panel Optimizers Work
Power optimizers ensure that there is a constant voltage in the string. It doesn’t matter what the length of the string is or what the environmental conditions are—these factors do not affect the energy yield of your solar panel system, thanks to the optimizer. They also monitor the performance of each panel and collect data about it.
Each power optimizer contains the unique SafeDCâ„¢ mechanism. When switched off or in the event of any issues, the DC voltage of the panel is automatically reduced to 1 volt.
Advantages of a Power Optimizer
To give you a good idea of the advantages of a SolarEdge optimizer, we’ve listed them for you. First, a SolarEdge optimizer allows you to combine different brands of panels, as well as panels with varying wattages, in one string. It also accommodates panels with different inclinations and orientations (east, west, south, north) within a single string.
Second, the SolarEdge optimizer ensures that shading doesn’t affect the entire string. Third, this optimizer includes a comprehensive safety system. In the event of unexpected issues, the voltage of the affected panel is automatically reduced to one volt. Finally, a SolarEdge optimizer comes with a 25-year warranty.
Disadvantages of a Power Optimizer
Using the SolarEdge optimizer does increase the cost of installation, but this price difference is offset over the years by the higher energy yield.
