More and more households are switching to electric and choosing sustainability. Think of electric stoves, heat pumps, or EV charging stations. Since these appliances use a lot of power, upgrading the main connection is often necessary. But how does that work? OptimaSolar explains!
First, it’s helpful to find out what your current main connection is. In your fuse box, you’ll find a meter. This can be an old analog meter, a digital meter, or a smart meter. Each meter has a meter number linked to a specific address. If you live in the south of the Netherlands, you can check your connection capacity via the grid operator Enexis.
The main difference between a 1-phase and a 3-phase connection is the electrical capacity available in your home. Many households in the Netherlands have a 1 x 35A connection, which allows a maximum demand of 35A x 230V = 8,050 Watts.
After upgrading to a 3-phase connection, this increases to: 25A x 230V x 3 = 17,250 Watts, a significant difference!
Enexis charges a one-time fee of €267.66 (incl. VAT, April 2025) to increase the capacity of your main connection. The good news: your monthly network costs remain the same as with a 1 x 35A or 40A connection, €39.66 including VAT.
Please note that your fuse box must meet certain requirements before Enexis can carry out the upgrade. If it doesn’t, the upgrade cannot be completed.
Enexis will only upgrade the main connection if the distribution board complies with the current NEN1010 standard. This includes, among other things:
One residual current device (RCD) per four groups
A 4-pole main switch

The actual upgrade is quick. Your fuse box is usually ready within an hour for a heat pump, induction stove, or EV charger. The waiting time is mainly in the application process.
