Mounting Solar Panels on Roof Tiles

Today, it is possible to mount solar panels on almost any type of roof. Each roof typically requires its own fastening system to secure the frame. Solar panels can be mounted on roof tiles using four components from the ClickFit Evo brand. Here’s what to keep in mind when mounting solar panels on tiled roofs.

Materials for Mounting Solar Panels on Roof Tiles

Mounting solar panels on roof tiles involves the use of roof hooks or truss hooks, mounting rails, module clamps, and end caps. First, the roof hooks are attached behind the tile battens. If it’s not possible to attach the hooks behind the battens, we use tension hooks, which are screwed into place.

How Are Solar Panels Mounted on Roof Tiles?

The mounting rail is then clicked onto the roof hooks. Depending on the orientation of the panels, the rail is fixed vertically (for landscape mounting) or horizontally (for portrait mounting). Once the rail is in place, the solar panels are mounted using module clamps that secure them to the rails. The finishing touch is the end caps, which are placed on the ends of the rails to give the system a neat and clean look.

Positioning Solar Panels on Tiled Roofs

Solar panels can be mounted either in portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal) orientation. The choice typically depends on practical factors. On most roofs, panels are installed in a portrait orientation. This often allows more panels to be placed higher on the roof and side by side. These panels benefit from longer sun exposure compared to those mounted lower on the roof. An added advantage of portrait orientation is that the underside of the panels is less visible from the ground, as the rails are mounted along the shorter side (the width).

Installing Solar Panels on Roof Tiles Without a Permit

If you want to install solar panels on your roof without a permit, there are a few conditions. Your house must not be a listed (monument) building, and the property must not be located in a protected townscape or village view area. Fortunately, this means that most houses in the Netherlands can have solar panels installed without any permit.

Important Considerations When Installing Solar Panels on Roof Tiles

Ideally, you want to place as many panels on your roof as possible. However, it’s important to consider the distance to the eaves, roof ridge, gutter, property boundaries, and any skylights. In addition, dormers are often not suitable for solar panels due to the limited weight they can bear—especially prefabricated dormers. OptimaSolar advises against installation on such structures.

Keeping a proper distance from the gutter is essential so rainwater flows into the gutter and doesn’t splash over it. You should also maintain a two-tile gap from the ridge, as this is where the top mounting rail is installed. If the ridge is made of masonry, you’ll need even more space between the mounting rail and the top of the roof, as the solar panels may extend slightly higher.

All-Black Solar Panel Systems

With full-black solar panels, it’s aesthetically pleasing to pair them with a black mounting frame. Today, most panels come with black frames, but some still feature silver frames. You can choose mounting materials to match: gray module clamps and end caps for silver frames, or black versions for black-framed panels.

Installing Panels on Multiple Roof Surfaces

It is also possible to install panels across different roof surfaces. In that case, it’s important to ensure proper electrical connection between the sections and to use an inverter designed for multiple orientations. Multiple strings will need to be connected to the inverter.

In-Roof Solar Panel Systems as Tile Replacements

Installing solar panels on top of roof tiles isn’t always necessary. With an in-roof system, solar panels can replace roof tiles using an integrated frame. These panels are recessed into the roof, making the system more visually appealing. However, this setup comes with downsides: it is more expensive and has less ventilation, which can cause panels to heat up more quickly. In extremely rare cases, this could increase the risk of fire.
