While solar panels have already been subject to a 0% VAT rate for several years, a home battery is still taxed at 21% VAT. However, in some cases, this VAT can be reclaimed through the Dutch…

In recent years, many households have invested in making their homes more sustainable, for example by installing solar panels. With the introduction of feed-in tariffs, investing in a home battery has become increasingly attractive. A home battery allows you to store excess energy you generate for later use. While purchasing a battery is a significant investment, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to dip into your savings.
The Dutch government believes that everyone should have the opportunity to make their homes more sustainable. To support this, the National Heat Fund (Nationaal Warmtefonds) was established in 2013 to provide financing options for sustainable home improvements. It’s good to know that the fund operates on a non-profit basis and offers low interest rates. For example, the interest rate is fixed for the entire duration of the loan—meaning it won’t increase over time.
Currently, for households with a combined annual income below €60,000, the interest rate is even 0%. For higher income brackets, the interest rate is currently (as of June 2024) 3.75% for a 7-year term. Available loan terms are 7, 10, or 15 years. For investments exceeding €15,000—or when using the Energy Savings Loan in combination with other financing—it’s possible to choose a 20-year term. The Heat Fund is backed by the central government and is accessible to nearly everyone. In practice, the monthly loan payment is often lower than the savings achieved on your energy bill.
The Energy Savings Loan can also be used for other sustainable improvements, such as insulating your home, installing a heat pump, or replacing single glazing with double glazing.
Another financing option for a home battery is the Sustainability Loan for Solar Panels, offered by the Stimuleringsfonds Volkshuisvesting (SVn) in cooperation with municipalities and provinces. This is a personal loan with a fixed interest rate and term. The loan is issued via a construction deposit, from which the associated costs can be paid. Please note that not all municipalities participate in this scheme, so it is important to check availability on the SVn website.
In short, home battery financing options are designed to make sustainable living more accessible to everyone.
