Enexis warns that parts of Brabant may be without power for days this winter if there is severe frost. No power means no heating, no Wi-Fi, no lights, and in many homes, no way to cook. Fortunately, you can prepare for this. With a home battery with a backup system, optionally in combination with solar panels, you can continue to have power even during a power outage.

A harsh winter ahead

It has long been known that the electricity grid in the Netherlands is under increasing pressure. Enexis announced this week that in extreme cold weather, it may have to temporarily shut down parts of the grid. High demand for electricity and limited capacity can cause disruptions and temporarily restrict the power supply. However, with a home battery with backup, you can be prepared, and your household will continue to function even during a power outage.

Solar panels and no power

During a power outage, everything comes to a standstill. Heating, lighting, and the internet stop working, and cooking on induction hobs is impossible. Even solar panels stop producing power because the inverter switches off automatically when there is no mains voltage. Without additional equipment, you cannot use the energy you generate yourself from your solar panels.

The solution: home battery with backup

A home battery with backup not only stores surplus solar energy for later use but can also continue to supply power during a power outage. The system automatically switches to the battery as soon as the grid fails. Within milliseconds, you will have power again for your appliances, such as the refrigerator, lights, or internet router. This way, you continue to have power without even noticing the outage.

Installation of a backup module

In many cases, the cable of the backup module is located directly behind the main switch. That’s why you will find it most of the time close to the fuse box. This module ensures that your home has power again within milliseconds. During a power outage, your home is temporarily disconnected from the grid so you can safely use your stored energy. Not every system has this feature as standard, so when choosing your home battery, battery inverter, or backup system, pay close attention to this option.

Different brands and their backup options

Several brands offer reliable home batteries with backup solutions:

  • SolarEdge – optional backup box: SolarEdge Home Backup Interface
  • APsystems – integrated backup in the battery inverter
  • Enphase – optional backup box: IQ System Controller
  • Sigenergy – integrated backup in the (battery) inverter
  • Growatt – in many cases, an optional backup box is required (depending on the inverter model): Growatt Backup Box
  • AlphaESS – optional backup box: Alpha ESS Backup Box Plus
  • Solis – depending on the chosen home battery brand.

This allows you to choose the right combination of solar panels and a home battery with backup so that you always have power.

Advice on solar panels and backup

You cannot always prevent power outages, but you can ensure that your home continues to function. With a home battery with backup function, you are prepared for any situation. This way, you stay warm, online, and independent even when it gets freezing cold outside.
