A Major Investment: How Long Do Solar Panels Last?

Investing in a solar energy system is a significant decision. That’s why questions about the payback period, financing, and lifespan are crucial. In this blog, we’ll explain everything you need to know about how long solar panels actually last.

Average Lifespan of OptimaSolar Panels

Let’s get straight to the point: high-quality solar panels today last, on average, around 40 years. They’re built to withstand all weather conditions. Compared to other household systems, this is an exceptionally long lifespan—mainly due to the special tempered glass used. However, product warranties vary from 12 to even 30 years, depending on the type of panel you choose.

Performance Degradation Over Time

Even though OptimaSolar only uses premium-quality panels, all solar panels experience slight performance degradation each year. That’s why manufacturers offer performance guarantees. Most ensure that panels will still generate at least 84% of their original capacity after 25 years. Proper installation is also essential. We recommend checking your system’s output regularly via the monitoring app. After installation, our team monitors your system for two weeks to ensure everything functions correctly.

Payback Period vs. Lifespan

If your solar panels were installed five years ago, they still have a lifespan of about 25 years remaining. However, newer systems may offer higher output and efficiency, thanks to improvements in watt-peak capacity and inverter technology. While performance has improved, the average lifespan of solar panels remains unchanged.

Maintenance: How to Extend Lifespan

Once installed, solar panels require very little maintenance—especially in the Dutch climate. However, if your panels collect a significant amount of dirt, we recommend professional cleaning. If you clean them yourself, be cautious: never use tap water due to its lime content. You can find detailed tips on our “Solar Panel Maintenance” page.

Moving House—Take the Panels With You?

In addition to reducing your electricity bill, solar panels also increase your home’s value by improving its energy label. While it’s possible to take panels with you when moving, OptimaSolar generally doesn’t recommend it. Dismantling and reinstalling takes time and effort, and newer technologies may be more cost-effective. Of course, we’d be happy to help you install a new system at your next home.

Warranty and System Lifespan

As mentioned earlier, product warranties for solar panels range from 12 to 30 years, depending on the brand and type. In addition, most manufacturers guarantee that after 25 years, panels will still generate at least 84% of their original capacity. By contrast, central inverters last only 8 to 12 years, meaning you’ll likely need to replace them at least once over the system’s lifetime.
