Budget Day 2023 for the Current Government: Gas Will Become Even More Expensive!

The government has announced its plans for the coming year, and energy costs are rising even further. The energy tax on gas will increase by no less than 19%. This will push the price of gas toward €1.50 per cubic meter. It’s high time to (partially) stop using gas. But how?

There are various ways to reduce gas consumption. For example, consider installing air conditioning for heating, using an electric boiler, installing a (hybrid) heat pump, or cooking on an electric hob. These options, when combined with solar panels, will certainly help reduce gas consumption.

Air Conditioning

Using air conditioning is beneficial for both cooling and heating. According to Essent, 75 percent of heating costs come from heating the home. By heating with air conditioning, you can save an average of 500 m³ of gas. At €1.50/m³, this means a savings of €750 per year. Heating with air conditioning costs an average of 1 kWh per hour. Assuming 700 hours of use per year, you will need 700 kWh of electricity.

Electric boiler

Gas is also needed to produce hot water. According to Milieucentraal, around 25 percent of gas consumption is used for heating water. On average, 350 m³ of gas is consumed for hot water, which costs about €600 per year. With an electric boiler of 150 liters, you will use approximately 2,000 kWh per year.

Installing a (Hybrid) Heat Pump

By using a heat pump, you can reduce natural gas consumption by up to 60%, according to Milieucentraal. A hybrid heat pump works in tandem with the central heating boiler. It’s also possible to opt for a heat pump that functions without a central heating boiler. When installing a heat pump, you can save up to 900 m³ of gas per year, which equals €1,350 in savings.

Electric Hob

Cooking with gas accounts for approximately 5% of gas consumption. By switching to an electric hob instead of a gas stove, you can save around 37 m³ of gas annually, according to Milieucentraal. That’s €55 per year.
